What is a Profile?

The names in Outlook are not particularly consistent. The following are (almost) the same:

•E-mail Account
•Mailbox
•Profile
•Personal Storage File
•PST File

 

Despite which name is used, it is always the "Superfolder" for inbox, outbox, tasks, contacts and several other folders. The data stored in a profile can be in your computer or another computer in a PST file or in an Exchange Server.
